![]() The Company with a Meaning The emblem of our Queensland home state is the Grus rubicundus crane, known as the Brolga. In the Aboriginal Dreamtime story, Brolga was a beautiful and graceful girl who was taken away by the dancers of nature, the whirlwinds, because of the beauty and fluidity of her dancing. She is honoured by Australian Aborigines and her name is given to the graceful Grus rubicundus which is famous for its elaborate courtship dance and powerful, smooth, high altitude flight as it travels over thousands of miles. During the 1590s, two early Dutch travellers and navigators, Pieter Keyser and Frederick de Houtman, mapped new constellations in the southern skies, choosing names of recently identified birds and animals including the Grus rubicundus which became known as 'Grus, the Crane'.
